Esperanto: letter to Prof. LEE, pres. of the UEA

Brussels, August 26, 1997

Dear Professor Lee,

First of all I should like to apologize for my delay in getting in touch with you, but recently, due to my commitments at the European Parliament and at the UN Subcommission on minorities in Geneva, as well as the extraordinary efforts of this Summer's TRP enrollment campaign, I have been very busy.

I am writing you to present a serious question for the future of the Coalition for an International Auxiliary Language. Marco Perduca has sent me a copy of a decision taken by UEA regarding its unwillingness of being associated, in any way, both with the Esperanto Radikala Asocio (ERA) and its Secretary Mr. Giorgio Pagano.

Some months ago, Mark Fettes told us about the problems between FEI and ERA. I would have never believed that they could lead to last April's unanimous decision of UEA to exclude the radical Esperantists from their contacts. Given the fact that no further notice of motivation was provided with the fax, I am not able to understand the reasons of it.

In order to prevent any possible negative effects of this decision of UEA, I take the occasion to underline how the best possible way to make our coalition work is to be open to all other organizations interested in Esperanto. ERA has joined the Coalition, and my understanding is that it is willing to contribute to its activities, I do not see how we could exclude it from the CIAL network.

I would like to thank you for your preoccupations regarding TRP's credibility. I realize, at the same time, that there are communication as well as understanding problems, but it should be in everybody's interest overcoming them.
