To the kind attention of Mr 0'Malley
Member of the Irish Parliament
Brussels, October 15, 1997
Dear Colleague,
Thank you very much for your support to the campaign for the international moratorium on death penalty. I particularly appreciate the initiative you are promoting in your Parliament and I hope your motion for a resolution will be soon approved.
As for your question: Ireland has already ratified the Second Optional Protocol to the International Convention of Civil and Political Rights as well as the Sixth Protocol to the European Convention. It has also voted in favour of the resolution for the moratorium on executions both in the UN General Assembly in 1994 and in the UN Commission on Human Rights this year.
I would welcome any further information about the result of the vote on your motion in the Irish Parliament.
Yours sincerely,
Olivier Dupuis, MEP
