José Maria Gil Robles Gil Delgado
President of the
European Parliament
Brussels, 24 February 1998
Honourable President,
on January 14 1998 the European Parliament approved a resolution on the situation in Tibet, in which it calls on the Council and the Commission to appoint an EU special representative for Tibet responsible for doing everything possible to carry out the Union's demands on the civil and political rights situation in Tibet.
This initiative, which follows the decision taken by the US State Department to name Dr. Gregory Craig as coordinator for U. S. policy on Tibet, has been welcomed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama who has publicly endorsed the position taken by the Parliament.
To give a concrete follow up to this political initiative, we ask you, Honourable President, to raise this issue on your next meeting with the President of the Commission and the President of the Council.
Sure that you will give a follow up to our requests, please accept our kindest regards.
Yours faithfully,
