New Zealand/moratorium on death penalty: letter to Mrs Bunkle

To the Attention of Mrs. Phillida Bunkle, MP

New Zealand

Strasburg, May 12, 1998

Dear colleague,

I first would like to thank you for your letter dated April where you had the courtesy to communicate your deep engagement in favour of the establishment of the worldwide moratorium on capital executions as a first step towards the universal abolition of the death penalty.

As you may know it already, another important stage of this campaign has been reached lat April 3 at the UN Human Rights Committee in Geneva through the adoption of a resolution calling for the establishment of a worldwide moratorium.

Notably after the adoption of this resolution we are convinced that the conditions exist to propose the General Assembly to adopt a resolution calling for the establishment of a worldwide moratorium. Several countries among the 64 that have co-sponsored the resolution in Geneva seem already ready to ask the inscription of this issue on the agenda of the next UN General Assembly.

In order to reinforce this core of first countries sponsoring the resolution, the Transnational Radical Party together with the Association "Hands off Cain", have launched a campaign of lobby addressed to the governments and the Foreign Affairs ministers of those counties that co-sponsored the Geneva resolution. New Zealand being one of the most involved countries in this issue, we think it would be particularly important that it takes part of the core of countries that demand the inscription of this item on the next UN General Assembly agenda.

Do you think you can solicit your government and your Foreign Affairs Minister so that they take such a strong stand in favour of the resolution deciding to ask the inscription of this item before the end of Agust?

Moreover, do you think that other colleagues of yours would undersign the appeal for the establishment of the worldwide moratorium.I'm looking forward to reading your answer and any suggestion you may want to do.

Sincerely yours,

Olivier Dupuis, MEP

Secretary General of the Radical Party

PS. Please find enclosed the resolution adopted in Geneva last April, the list of sponsoring countries and the letter we sent to your Foreign Affairs Minister.
