Dear Mr. PerDuca,
1. NGO Committee meeting:
Thank you for your information regarding the NGO Committee meeting. I have just
phoned Rochelle about it. She said she has talked to you about it, and she will attend the
Committee meeting on 28 and 29 May, when the Committee discusses (hopefully) the request
for recommending International Auxiliary Language as one of the agenda of ECOSOC
meeting.
I thought the Committee will discuss the request in 22-25 June! If I had known it earlier, I
could have attended the meeting and could have cooperated with you in lobbying for the
proposal.
Last year, I talked to most of the 19 members of the NGO Committee, and the
delegations from the following country responded favorably to my request.
1. Bulgaria - He studies Esperanto before and knew about its usefulness.
2. China - He said he will talk about it with his ambassador. (We became good
friend. Say hallow to him for me.)
3. Cuba - Favorably responded. The World Esperanto Congress was held in Havana in
1990, and President Castro attended the congress.
4. Tunisia - Responded favorably.
5. U.S.A. - She showed a great interest in Esperanto, and found it very interesting.
6. Korea (South) - Observer, but had a right to intervene. Favorably responded.
7. Korea (North) - Listened attentively to my explanation and showed interest.
8. Somaria - She was favorable to my explanation. Seems to be an influential person
in the Committee.
These I remember now in my office. The records are in my house. This evening (or
tomorrow morning your time), please check my e-mail. I will give you some more
information on what was done last year.
Rochelle informed me that the Committee will not discuss UEA's request for
reclassification during its May meeting. She will let me know if the request will be discussed
during the June Committee meeting (22-25 June)
2. CIAL Newsletter:
I see the difficulty of communicating a half way across the globe, Korea-New
York-Ottawa. I wish we had had a better communication on the matters related with the
CIAL Newsletter.
I believe the letters were sent to selected NGOs(about 200?) and state missions to UN
(150?). Rochelle can give you better information.
The expenses involved must be small, and was financed out of the fund available for
the "Campaign 2000 for a New International Language Order" which UEA launched last year.
3. The 2nd CIAL meeting:
I think it is essential to hold the 2nd meeting. The agenda might be;
1) Organizational matters of CIAL
2) Arrangements for issuing CIAL newsletters
3) Strategies and basic direction of the activities of CIAL
4) How to increase the membership of CIAL
The best time would be the time when the NGO Committee meeting is in session. I
understand that the June sessions will be from 22-25 June. If the 23rd June is inconvenient
for you, would you suggest some other dates during the NGO Committee meeting period?
Please talk to Rochelle at 212-687-7041 regarding the dates.
LEE Chong-Yeong (28 May)
