Dear Sir,

Reference is made to your letter of July 27, 1999 concerning the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Iceland was among the first States to sign the Rome Statute and emphasizes its early entry into force. The ministry for Foreign Affairs is now preparing a proposal for resolution on the ratification of the Statute by Iceland to be presented to the Althing at its coming session. Furthermore, the Ministry of Justice is preparing a legislative project on this matter to be presented to the Althing simultaneously. The prospects are that Iceland will ratify the Rome Statute in the year 2000.
