For the kind attention of H.E. Mr. Ljubco GEORGIEVSKI
Prime Minister of the Republic of Macedonia
Brussels, 11 October, 1999
Esteemed Mr. Prime Minister,
I allow myself to draw your attention on an issue that has always seen Your Country playing a leading role: the establishment of the International Criminal Court.
As you certainly know, the Court will enter into force only after that at least 60 countries have ratified the Rome Treaty. Although so far 87 Countries have already signed the Statute, only four countries have also ratified it: Senegal, Trinidad and Tobago, San Marino and Italy.
It is in such a context, and unfortunately after a year that has brought two more tragedies in terms of lives and rule of law - the one of Kosovo and the one of East Timor - that the Radical Party has launched together with the International Committee "No Peace Without Justice" an international campaign for the ratification of the Statute by at least 60 countries before the end of the year 2000. Therefore, as of today, are missing the ratification of 56 Countries and we still have little more than 450 days to reach the goal of providing the international community with this first international criminal jurisdiction.
Therefore I address you, Mr. Prime Minister, in the hope that, thanks to the initiative of Your Government and to Your personal engagement, Your Country can be among those that will ratify the Statute in the newt weeks. That would certainly give a new impulse to our common battle for international justice.
Thanking you in advance for your attention, I remain at Your complete disposal for any initiative aiming at bringing closer the opening of negotiations for the adhesion of Macedonia to the European Union.
Please accept my best and most respectful regards.
Olivier Dupuis
