EP/Tibet: letter to Mr. Gerard Collins

To the kind attention of Mr. Gerard Collins

Member of the European Parliament

Brussels, June 6, 2000

Dear President,

I was happy to know that the visit in Taiwan was successfull. I share your views that this is a real important matter for the future of the all region. I personnally think that we can even exclude that the Bejing authorities could use a war against Taiwan as a way to escape the enormous problems they have at home.

Always concerning that region of the world, I was very pleased to discover, as I told you this morning, that you are member of the Tibet intergroup. As you probably know the intergroup have now the support of three polical groups and is now officially recognized.

On this issue, I think as many Tibetan friends and friends of Tibet that we have to "invent" something new in order to strenghten the pressure on the chinese authorities, trying to introduce a sorte of agenda in the struggle for obtaining direct negociations between the chinese authorities and the tibetan government in exile. This proposal received also a large support during the last international conference of the Tibet Support groups in Berlin last month.

It is in that way that I have proposed at the last intergroup meeting in Strasbourg to table a resolution on Tibet during next July plenary session. This idea was accepted by the intergroup and it was agreed that I would prepare a proposal. I'm pleased to send it you.

Friendly yours,

Olivier Dupuis
