Tibet: letter to Samdhong Rinpoche

To the kind attention of Samdhong Rinpoche

Brussels, September 20, 2000

Dear Rinpoche,

First of all I apologize for being so late in answering to your last and beautiful message. Our fight for not being expulsed from the UN is still going on. The next meeting of the NGO Committee of the UN (who have to prepare a recomandation of the Assembly) will take place on September 27 and we have no clear signal at the moment that the Russians want to change their mind.

I have just learnt that you are now in the United States. I hope you will able to read this message. I know from Marcelle Roux who asked me to book a room in the European Parliament office of Paris for a press conference, that you will be in Europe around mid-october. I will be more than happy to meet you again there.

At the European Parliament we have been in a rush for three weeks now concerning the question of the candidacy of Ngawang Sangdrol for the Sakharov Prize 2000. The things are not going bad. 120 MEPs are already supporting this candidacy. At the moment I would tell we have 20% of chances to succeed. Lets hope !

Generaly speaking I'm more and more convinced that we have to push hard on the national parliaments (beginning with Europe, the US, Canada, Australia, ) on the question of passing resolutions similar to the one passed last July by the European Parliament. In this view we would like to organize at the European Parliament next 7 and 8 December a working meeting with about 200 Tibet activists in order to understand how to coordinate the efforts at a european level. We would be very pleased to have you there as honour guest.

I hope this letter will find you in a good shape.

Sincerely yours,

Olivier
