Pannella Marco - 20 agosto 1980
POLAND
By Marco Pannella

ABSTRACT: The PR's members of parliament request the immediate calling of the national and European Parliamentary Commissions about the situation in Poland. Pannella asks for an entrance visa to make a trip there at once. The reactions of the political and union circles is an inadequate liturgical chant of solidarity. "L'Unità" (1) in calling Pannella's request bizarre to immediately communicate the solidarity of Italian workers to the Polish movement, thus reveals how its Euro-communism is in reality Euro-complicity with applied Communism: in contrast, the representatives of the Spanish workers' commissions are about to arrive in Danzig with the consent of the Spanish Communist Party.

(LOTTA CONTINUA, (2) August 20, 1980)

"In the name of the Radical [parliamentary] group I have asked the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies and the President of the Foreign Affairs Commission to convene the Commission immediately to discuss what to do in relation to the Polish situation and for the defense of human and civil rights as protected by the Charter of Human Rights and the Helsinki agreement itself.

"I have also asked, together with Maria Antonietta Macciocchi and Emma Bonino, the President of the European Parliament Simone Veil, who only today has returned to Paris, to convene the Parliament's Political and Foreign Affairs Commissions.

"I have requested a visa for Poland where I intend to go at once.

"The reaction of the Italian political and union spheres up to now strike me as inadequate. The liturgy of false and shaky solidarity must stop. This suicidal and also murderous reaction (which has been dragged into the post-Yalta period in which we live) of complicity and no resistance to the aggressions, the invasions, the violations of human rights, of the tongue-in-cheek reciprocal deploring only aimed at exploiting events of national politics which instead can be stopped or which must receive hard and conclusive replies.

"L'Unità, which calls bizarre my request to the Italian unions to immediately send a message of Italian workers' "solidarity" to the Polish workers and demo-Socialist movement, shows how very often the "Euro-Communist" position is only a " "Euro-complicity" position with regard to applied Communism. which is to say with the country that today has the potentiality of extermination and political barbarism, which in the Thirties was structurally located in the Fascist world, seconded by the policies of NATO and the "Western democracies" who are the heirs not of anti-Fascism but of Daladier's and Chamberlain's policies of cowardly complicity with violence and aggression from Spain to Munich.

"Representatives of the Spanish Workers Commissions are about to arrive in Danzig with the consent - for now - of the Spanish Communist Party.

"We must, I repeat, immediately mobilise in order to give all those who in Poland are fighting for peace and liberty, for Socialism and an authentic workers democracy the solidarity of our council, of motivated and prudent hope. It is necessary that those who might think, in the coming hours, of seizing them, should know - also in the name of international law and of that which was sanctioned by the Nuremberg trials - that this time the solidarity of democrats, Socialists and pacifists is real and solid."
