I am deeply overcome and shocked by the tragic death of your husband.

Anwar el Sadate was one of the signatories of the Nobel Prize Winner's Manifesto on hunger and underdevelopment in the world, the principles and objectives of which I intend to uphold by the hunger strike I began on 2 September.

May I express my deep sorrow at the horrible crime that has been committed. Egypt has lost a proud and courageous President and the world mourns one of its rare man of peace.
