ABSTRACT: Resolution tabled by Jef Ulburghs, Roberto Cicciomessere and others to the European Parliament on 8th December 1986 and approved on 11th December 1986, on the sale of arms to Iran( doc. B2 1301/86)
The European Parliament,
A.having to the seven years'war between Iran and Iraq,which has led to very considerable losses in terms of human lives and material damage,
B. noting that the sale of arms to Iran by the Unites States has
resulted in the prolongation of the Iran-Iraq war and indirectly
supports the khomeini-regime where the most elementary human rights are violated daily,
C. considering the European countries'involvement in the sale of
arms to Iran and Iraq,
1. Calls for the immediate condemnation of any military aid in the Iran-Iraq war;
2. Deplores that the money from the United States' arms sales should be used to support so-called liberation movements such as,
for example , the Contras in Nicaragua and Unita in Angola;
3. Calls on the Commission to carry out an investigation into arms sales by Community Member States;
4. Calls urgently on the Commission to take measures to harmonise regulations on arms sales;
5. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Foreign Ministers meeting in political co-operation and the Commission.
