WE RADICALS, THE RAI AND THE POLISH PEOPLE
By Marco Pannella

ABSTRACT: The mobilisation of the Trans-national Radical Party, in Warsaw as in Rome, to oppose the support that the government, the Vatican and the lobbies intend to furnish to the Polish totalitarian regime.

(Il Giornale d'Italia, January 12, 1987)

The action that took place in Warsaw yesterday, ending with the arrest and expulsion of our party was meant to be a positive reply to the initiative of the Italian government, the Vatican and the Western lobbies in strong and explicit support of the Polish totalitarian regime.

A positive and not merely polemical reply that takes on our responsibilities and goes once again into action. In recent days the Italian RAI-TV, a public service of the state, censored all news of the action undertaken in Italy to express here as well to the concrete and true solidarity, not mere talk, of those who support the Polish people, Solidarity, and the ideas and struggles for political democracy, a constitutional state, non-violence, and peace founded upon the freedom of peoples and persons.

The Party Internationals along with the governments held erect by their representatives follow the illusory and hardly noble, suicidal policy of co-existence with the anti-democratic regimes, defending their stability, which is to say their institutional violence, which was so tragically pursued in the Thirties.

The Radical Party intends to become increasingly - if not as an alternative to the Party Internationals, yet completely independent from them - an international party for justice and liberty, a party of action and ideas, entrusting to a modern perspective of mass struggle and liberation of the Gandhian type, the conquest of a United States of Europe which will be victorious in the critical confrontation with a Europe and a world of oppression and no liberty existing, united and operating in the Soviet empire.

In the coming days the action begun in Warsaw will continue in Italy. It will start today, Monday, with the action of lighting candles on Roman window sills or inside behind the glass but visible from the outside. The RAI-TV has massively censored this request and demonstration so that Romans will not be able to express their solidarity with Solidarity and their hostility to the dictator, thus showing themselves [i.e. the RAI, ed.] to be culturally and practically better "Poles" and more dangerous and hypocritical than the regime of dictatorship, however much richer and ostentatious it may be. The Warsaw regime thus defends itself in and from Rome against the rights of the two peoples to honest and democratic information as well.
