ABSTRACT : resolution presented by Jef Ulburghs, Roberto Cicciomessere and others on the 17th May 1988 to the European parliament
The European Parliament,
A. having regard to the visit by a delegation of Belgian
peace organisations to peace movements in Poland, where one of
the subjects covered was the problem of conscientious objectors
in Poland,
B. whereas the Belgian delegation was arrested on 10 May in
Warsaw and on 11 May in Szczecin and expelled without explanation,
C. whereas Michalis Maragakis has been in prison for several
months in Greece and is on hunger strike,
D. whereas both the Council of Europe and the UN Commission on
Human Rights have recognised the right to conscientious objection,
1. Calls on the Polish Government to recognise the right to conscientious objection;
2. Calls on the Greek Government also to recognise this rights and to release Michalis Maragakis;
3. Requests that in Belgium and in all Member States of the EEC a statute be establishes for conscientious objectors laying down
the duration and remuneration of their service and providing for
a free choice of public service organisations;
4. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the
Council,the Commission,the Governments of Poland, Greece and
Belgium and to the other Member States.
