RADICAL PARTY FEDERAL COUNCIL

ABSTRACT: The Radical Party Federal Council's members' biographies - 1989.

The Federal Council is composed of 91 members:

Thirty-five of whom were directly elected at the Congress in Budapest (three from Hungary, two from Poland, two from Yugoslavia and one each from the USSR, France, Holland, Belgium, Portugal, Brazil, Canada, the Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Israel. The other eighteen are Italian); and

Fifty-six members by right (those presently or formerly members of parliament, secretary, treasurer, members of the secretariat or committees, who are members of the RP for 1989).

Adelaide AGLIETTA, Italy: Member by Right.

Organizer of CISA (Italian Centre for Sterilization and Abortion) in Turin, she has been since 1975 one of the protagonists in the battle for the legalization of abortion. In 1977, she was the first and only woman in Italian history to be elected secretary of a political party. Reconfirmed in 1978, she was assigned to take part in the trial in Turin of the Red Brigades. In 1979, she was Treasurer of the Radical Party, and that same year was elected for the first time member of the Chamber of Deputies, in which position she was active above all the areas of information, justice and ecology. In 1986-87, she was among the creators of the referendum campaign for a just justice. One of the organizers of the Rainbow ticket, she was elected to European Parliament last June. She is one of the six Vice-Secretaries of the Radical Party.

Mike AJAY, Italy: Member by Right.

Of Nigerian origin, he lives in Turin, where he works as a male nurse. On the Radical ticket of 1987, he was the first black political candidate to run in the history of the Italian Republic. He was elected Member of the Federal Council in 1988, with the greatest number of votes after Marco Pannella.

Rene ANDREANI, Italy: Member by Right.

Member of the Secretariat of Stanzani. A financial manager, he changed profession and began activism in the Radical Party in 1976, after having attended a meeting of Marco Pannella. In 1980, he organized the "Committee against the Exhibition of Warships". He has also been committed passionately to the struggle against starvation. Since 1982, many times member of the Federal Council and since 1983, more than once the Party's auditor. Elected politically in 1984, he resigned, giving up a seat in Parliament. A candidate on the Radical Party ticket in 1987, he was first of the non-elected to the Chamber of Deputies. He organized the actions supporting Marco Pannella, EEC Commissioner, and the recent referendum campaign against pesticides. He was one of the organizers of the "Rainbow List".

Laura ARCONTI, Italy: Elected Member.

Financial consultant, she has been a member of the Radical Party since 1975. Many times member of the Federal Council and auditor of the Radical Party, she is currently Secretary of the Food and Disarmament Association, the Italian section of Food and Disarmament International. A non-violent activist, she has been committed since 1982 to the campaign "Survival" against starvation. She has organized many non-violent actions, such as collective hunger strikes. With her colleague, Laura Terni, secretary of the Gandhian Association "Satyagraha", she works at the conference, "Radicals and Non-Violence: A Means, A Hope". Candidate since 1979 on the Antiprohibitionist ticket, she was a candidate in the European elections last June on the Antiprohibitionist ticket. She collaborated on the publication of the minutes of the Congress, "The Cost of Prohibition", finding the necessary funds.

Ornella BAGNATO, Italy: Member by Right.

Radical from Genoa, she was part in 1980 of the Rutelli secretariat.

Angiolo BANDINELLI, Italy: Member by Right.

Among the founders of the Radical Party and Secretary in 1970, 1972 and 1973, and Treasurer in 1969. In 1977, he was elected City Councilor of Rome and Radical Deputy in the last legislature. Many times a Member of the Federal Council of the Radical Party, he was its president in 1981. He has directed many Radical publications, from Radical Prova to Radical News, and collaborated on services and enquiries for Radio Radical.

Franca BERGER, Italy: Elected Member.

Radical from the Trentino, she was part of the Rippa and Negri Secretariats, in 1980 in 1985, respectively. An active environmentalist in the Trentino and one of the organizers of the New Left ticket in 1978. In the last administrative elections was elected Provincial Councilor on the Environmentalist ticket.

Lucio BERTE', Italy: Elected Member.

Radical from Milan and Member of the Federal Council since 1987, he has been involved in the battle against starvation and has conducted numerous non-violent actions. An architect, he founded the Association for the Right to a Home in Milan.

Marie-Andree BERTRAND, Canada: Elected Member.

Magistrate and university professor in the Department of Criminology at the University of Montreal, she is also one of the founders of LIA (International Antiprohibitionist League), and was elected its president. Leader of the Canadian Feminist Movement, she has been since the early 1970s a Government Advisor on the drug problem.

Eros BICIC, Yugoslavia: Elected Member.

Journalist, former editor of Radio Capodistria, he writes for numerous Yugoslav and European newspapers. He organized "Group 88", the political and cultural association for the Italian minority in Yugoslavia and is involved in the struggle for minority rights on a transnational level. He has been a member of the Radical Party since 1988 and has worked with Radical Radio.

Emma BONINO, Italy: Member by Right.

Began her political activism in 1975, founding CISA and was imprisoned as a result of a self-denunciation for procuring abortion. Elected to Italian Parliament in 1976 and European Parliament in 1979, she organized the anti-nuclear campaign together with the environmentalist association, "Friends of the Earth". A protagonist in the battle against starvation, she was Secretary of Food and Disarmament International. She is one of the six Vice-Secretaries of the Radical Party.

Willer BORDON, Italy: Member by Right.

The only Communist Deputy to join the Radical Party. Mayor of Muggia for many years, he promoted the first city referendum against a coal plant. He was one of the first mayors to underwrite the appeal against starvation. He joined the Radical Party at its Italian Congress in Rimini in May of this year, and since then has participated actively in Party activities.

Marino BUSDACHIN, Italy: Elected Member.

From Trieste, he joined the Radical Party in the early 1970s and has participated in all the Party's political campaigns. Many times Member of the Federal Council, he was one of the organizers of the Radical party's struggle against the Treaty of Osimo in Trieste. He was city councilor until 1982. He has worked for the transnational Radical Party in Yugoslavia, Hungary and Russia.

Paolo BUZZANCA, Italy: Elected Member.

A Radical from Palermo, he has many times been Member of the Federal Council. He lived for some time in Sardinia, where he was elected regional councilor on the Radical ticket, and conducted antimilitarist and civil rights campaigns. In recent years he returned to Palermo where he now teaches. He has recently been involved in the battle to resolve the water problem in Sicily, undertaking a long hunger strike.

Peppino CALDERISI, Italy: Member by Right.

Currently leader of the European Federalist Group in Montecitorio, Deputy in past legislatures, Treasurer from 1984 to 1987, during the Negri Secretariat, he was the author of numerous referendum petitions and responsible for the organizational part of collecting signatures for them. His contribution during the various Radical campaigns have been determinant during parliamentary discussion on the financial law and the State balance.

Filippo CARIA, Italy: Member by Right.

Professor of Philosophy at the University of Madrid and member of the Stanzani Secretariat, he has been a member of the Radical Party since 1979.

Vito CEZMADINSKI, Yugoslavia: Elected Member.

Graphic designer, He joined the Party for the first time in 1988 in Florence, and was involved in organizing the Radical Group for the United States of Europe in Zagreb.

Roberto CICCIOMESSERE, Italy: Member by Right.

Jailed in 1972 as a conscientious objector, it is thanks to his efforts that the right to conscientious objection against military service was recognized in Italy. Treasurer in 1970 and Secretary in 1971 and 1984. In 1969, he was organizational Secretary of LID (Italian Divorce League). Radical Deputy in the Italian and European Parliaments. During his secretariat, in 1984, the law was passed against starvation which, although not the law intended by the Radical Party, did contribute to saving hundreds of thousands of lives.

Franco CORLEONE, Italy: Member by Right.

Milanese, with a degree in Political Science, he was director of the Lombardy Region. He has been a member of the Radical Party since 1972, and was Secretary of the Party in Lombardy and, in 1982, was President of the Federal Council. Leading the way in the battles for civil rights and the protection of the environment in Milan, he is also Secretary of the cultural association, "Il Politecnico". He entered Montecitorio for the first time for the IX legislature and, in the successive one, succeeded Gianluigi Melega. In 1987 he was elected senator. Among the organizers of the "Rainbow" ticket, he was elected deputy to the European Parliament last June. With Domenico Modugno, and the collaboration of Radical Radio and "Espresso", he denounced the incredible conditions in which patients in the mental institute of Agrigento were forced to live.

Orna CSILLAG, Israel: Elected Member.

Activist of RATZ, the Israeli Civil Rights Movement and a university researcher, she has been a member of the Radical party since 1986 and Member of the precedent Federal Council.

Sergio D'ELIA, Italy: Member by Right.

Member of the Stanzani Secretariat. Ex-member of Prima Linea, he is still serving a long sentence. According to provisions in Article 21 of the Gozzini Law, he is able to spend the day working in the offices of the Radical Party, returning to Rebibbia prison every evening. He has been a member of the Radical Party since 1986, together with many colleagues of the same tendency.

Alexandre DE PERLINGHI, Belgium: Elected Member.

A university student, he joined the Radical Party for the first time in 1983. He realized a video film of the history of the Radical party. He works with the Radicals elected to the European Parliament, was a candidate in the last European elections, and following a draft bill by the Radicals, was elected to Parliament on the Laic Federation ticket in Italy.

Mario DE STEFANO, Italy: Member by Right.

Member of the Stanzani secretariat. Many times member of the Federal Council. As a lawyer, he has made available to the Radical Party his juridical knowledge. He was also one of the organizers and creators of the campaign and referendum for a just justice.

Evghjenia DEWBRASKAJA, Soviet Union: Elected Member.

She was elected to the Federal Council, at the Congress in Budapest with the highest number of votes after Marco Pannella. Leader of the Radical association, "Peace and Liberty", which counts 70 Soviet members of the Radical Party, she organized the demonstrations against the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Over the years, she has often been imprisoned for having participated in and organizing demonstrations. Up to the present, she has not been able to take active part in Radical Party activities outside her country as she has not yet been able to obtain an exit visa.

Gino DEL GATTO, Italy: Elected Member.

Physician and Endocrinologist, he has long been committed to the drug antiprohibitionist battle, and was sentenced in Pescara for having prescribed morphine for a drug addict. The same court which condemned him affirmed the high moral and social value of his actions in favour of drug addicts. Head of the Antiprohibitionist list in the last European elections, and succession member of Parliament to European Parliament, he is also Secretary of CORA and one of the founding members of LIA.

Gianfranco DELL'ALBA, Italy: Member by Right.

Member of the Stanzani Secretariat, with a degree in Jurisprudence, he is an expert in international law. He has lived for years in Brussels, where he is an official in European Parliament and General Secretary of the Non-Members Group. He was part of the Negri Secretariat and was particularly involved in the battle against starvation in Europe.

Gaetano DENTAMARO, Italy: Elected Member.

A conscientious objector, he refused to do his military service and was imprisoned for some weeks. He is still awaiting trial. He has organized non-violent demonstrations in the Eastern European countries and was expelled from Turkey and Yugoslavia. He worked for many years with Radical Radio on the programme "Street Interviews" and was responsible for the instant-book, "Perdo e stravinco " (I lose and win hands down) on Pannella, EEC Commissioner.

Maria Teresa DI LASCIA, Italy: Member by Right.

A Radical since 1975, she began her political activism in Naples with the campaign for Referendum 8, and with the campaign against starvation, she was responsible for the adhesion of thousands of Italian mayors. She was Vice-Secretary of the Radical Party in 1982, during the Secretariat of Pannella and Deputy for a few days during the last legislature. She organized the national referendum against nuclear plants and supports homeopathic medicine, for which she organized an important conference, drawing up a draft bill for its recognition. From 1984 to 1986, she was director of the newspaper Radical News. She is currently a member of the Stanzani Secretariat.

Gorges DONNEZ, France: Member by Right.

Lawyer, Member of European Parliament elected on the UDF-RPR ticket in the preceding legislature. He was president of the Commission for the authorization to proceed as regards the resignation of Enzo Tortora. He has been a member of the Radical Party since 1986. in his position as Deputy in Strasbourg, he has supported many of the actions of Radical Members of Parliament, particularly as regards legal matters.

Vincenzo DONVITO, Italy: Elected Member.

Cultural impresario in Florence and a Radical activist in the 1970s, he was part of the national administration during the Spadaccia secretariat in 1974. Coordinator for Radical actions in Florence, he is one of the most convinced supporters of the piazza roundtable as a means of political action and contact with the citizen.

Olivier DUPUIS, Belgium, Member by Right.

Member of the Stanzani Secretariat and convinced conscientious objector, he gave himself up to the Belgian authorities in October of 1985, and served a month's imprisonment in Saint Gilles. He received a first-degree sentence of two years' imprisonment. However, that judgment was reversed, due to irregular proceedings, by the Supreme Court. He was tried once more, and once more was sentenced to two years' forced labour. He was responsible for the French language edition of Radical News. He also organized and participated in various demonstrations in the Eastern European countries. He was expelled from Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia and has lived for long periods in Poland and Hungary working towards the creation of the transnational Radical Part.

Jean-Maurice DUVAL, France: Member by Right.

Member of the Stanzani Secretariat and former President of the Movement of Young Radicals of the French Left, Assistant at European Parliament, member of the Valois (France) Radical Party, formerly Deputy Mayor of Ramboullet, he is currently city councilor of that city.

Adele FACCIO, Italy: Member by Right.

Founder of CISA and protagonist during the 1970s supporting the Feminist Movement and favour of free sex; in 1975, she denounced herself for procuring abortion and gave herself up to the police during a demonstration at the Cinema Adriano in Rome. President of the Radical Party in 1975/76, since 1976 she has many times been Deputy, and still is, elected on the Radical ticket. A committed champion of animals and the environment, she was one of the organizers of the "Rainbow" ticket, on which she was candidate in the last European elections.

Laura FOSSETTI, Italy: Member by Right.

Radical Party activist from Pisa, she was involved in the struggle for sexual liberation. Director of "Fuori!", she was part of the Aglietta Secretariat in 1977. She was, and is, one of the most generous supporters of the Radical Party.

Paolo GHERSINA, Italy, Elected Member.

Triestino, conscientious objector, and for years a member of the Radical Party, he has worked with the Radical European Parliamentary Group. He is city councilor in Trieste, elected on the Laic and Environmentalist ticket.

Roberto GIACHETTI, Italy: Member by Right.

Conscientious objector and formerly part of the Rutelli Secretariat, he was for years editor of Radical Radio, also as correspondent to Montecitorio. He currently works for the Press Service of the Senate European Federalist Environmentalist Group.

Basile GUISSOU, Burkina Faso: Member by Right.

One of the six Vice Secretaries of the Radical Party, he is involved in the struggle for the right to life and the life of right, also on the African continent. He was Minister of Foreign Affairs during the presidency of Thomas Sankara. and following the coup d'etat which brought Blaise Compaore' to power, was imprisoned and tortured. He was released thanks to the intervention of the Radical Party, in particular Marco Pannella. A member of the Radical Party from the time he was Minister of Foreign Affairs of his country, he has participated directly in actions against starvation and often participated in the annual Easter marches organized by the Radical Party.

Anthony HENMAN, Brazil: Elected Member.

Member of the Federal Drug Commission of the Brazilian government, he is the author of a classic text on the question of coca in Latin America entitled, Mama cuca. He is also involved in the campaign to save of the forests of the Amazon. He joined the Radical party at the Congress in Budapest, was one of the founders of LIA and is part of its secretariat.

Felix KARMAN, Hungary: Elected Member.

Former Deputy to the Hungarian Parliament, he joined the Radical Party in 1988.

Marek KRUKOWSKI, Poland: Elected Member.

Biologist and one of the founding members of Wolnosc i Pokoi (Liberty and Peace), he has been a member of the Radical Party since 1986.

Gianni LANZINGER, Italy: Member by Right.

Deputy for the Environmentalist Group, he joined the Radical Party during the Radical Party Congress in Budapest, announcing his decision from the rostrum.

Massimo LENSI, Italy: Elected Member.

A university student in Florence, he is one of the most active "travelling salesmen" for the transnational party. During the past two years, he has travelled uninterruptedly from Florence to Trieste, from Lubiana to Belgrade, from Budapest to Warsaw, and participated in the organization of the Congress in Budapest.

Oscar LO PANE, Italy: Member by Right.

Radical activist from Brescia and a member of the Negri Secretariat, he has been involved in the battle against starvation, and has done valuable research on aid to development to the peoples of the Third World.

Costanza LOPEZ, Italy: Member by Right.

A member of the Spadaccia Secretariat in l975, she currently works in the Radical Party Treasurer's Office.

Anne LOSONCZI, Hungary, Naturalized Belgian: Elected Member.

Professor of Ethnology in the Free University of Brussels and Paris-Nanterre University, she personally experienced tragedy of Budapest in 1956 when her father Geza was a Minister in the Imre Nagy Government. Her entire family was deported to Roumania, and her father, who was to have been hung with Nagy and another four ministers of his Cabinet, died a short time before following a hunger strike. She joined the Radical party in October of 1988.

Giuglio MANFREDI, Italy: Elected Member.

A university student, he has for years been a point of reference for the organization of Radical action in Turin. he joined the Radical Party in 1986.

Manuel MASSENO, Portugal: Elected Member.

Student of Law and member of the leadership of Young Portuguese Socialists. He joined the Radical Party in 1987.

Primo MASTRANTONI, Italy: Member by Right.

Environmentalist Councilor for the Latium Region since 1985, he was candidate in the European elections on the Environmentalist-Rainbow ticket. He has for years led battles in favour of protecting the environment. He was a member of the Negri Secretariat and founded the Radical Environmental Association and the Radical Commission of Users and Consumers.

Gianluigi MELEGA, Italy: Member by Right.

Journalist for the weekly "Espresso". In his position as journalist, and backed by Radical Deputies, he was directly responsible for the resignation of President of the Republic, Giovanni Leone. He was elected Deputy on the Radical ticket, and one of his Parliamentary speeches, in which he defined the Christian Democrats as a criminal association, is famous. During the last European elections, although not a candidate, he supported the "Environmentalist Rainbow" ticket.

Luis MENDAO, Portugal: Member by Right.

Member of the Stanzani Secretariat, he lives and works in Lisbon. He joined the Radical Party in 1986, and since then has been the most active Radical exponent in his country.

Domenico MODUGNO, Italy: Member by Right.

Radical Member of Parliament in the European Federalist Group, he was elected on the Radical ticket. He was among those who fought to save the Radical Party in 1986, during the campaign to reach 10,000 members. He succeeded, with passion and political commitment, in defeating the serious illness which had caused him to abandon his professional activity. In Parliament, he fought to resolve the health assistance problem in Italy and continued on with his battle to bring attention to the seriously deteriorated conditions of our mental institutions.

Giovanni NEGRI, Italy: Member by Right.

Currently Vice-Secretary, he was Secretary in l985, l986 and l987. He was one of the organizers of the referendum campaign for justice and the anti-nuclear and anti-hunting campaigns. In 1986, with the slogan, "Choose or Close", he directed the extraordinary campaign for 10,000 members. Radical Deputy first to Italian Parliament and then to European Parliament, he has been a leader in the battles regarding media and information and against starvation. He also sustained a very long hunger strike. In the last European elections, he was a candidate on the Psdi ticket, and is a member of the national council of that organization. At the Congress in Budapest, he officially opened the "Viva Tibet" campaign against the violent Chinese oppression of that nation.

Anna NIEDZWIECKA, Poland: Elected Member.

A university student and member of Wolnosc i Pokoi, involved i the battle for human rights, she was among the very first to join the Radical Party in Poland.

Ivan NOVELLI, Italy: Elected Member.

Antimilitarist and responsible, since the 1970s, of the reviews, "L'Alternativa nonviolenta" and "L'Asino", he has also participated in various Radical actions in the Eastern European countries. He contributed considerably to saving the life of Paula Cooper, symbol of the international effort to abolish the death penalty.

Sandro OTTONI, Italy: Member by Right.

Member of the Stanzani Secretariat, Florentine and convinced conscientious objector, he was arrested during the Radical Congress of 1986 and detained for many months in the military prison of Peschiera. For more than a year he travelled back and forth between Trieste and Yugoslavia, where he coordinated an exceptional membership campaign for the Radical Party. It was thanks also to his efforts, that the 35th Radical Party Congress came as close as it did to being held in Zagreb.

Gaoussou OUATTARA, The Ivory Coast: Elected Member.

Currently a resident of Rome, he came to the Radical Party in the wake of the campaign against world starvation, and following the assassination of Thomas Sankara, for whom he organized a Commemorative Mass in Rome, after having been prevented from doing so in Burkina. He was a member of the Federal Council in 1988.

Marizio PAGANI, Italy: Member by Right.

He is President of the Italian Senate Democratic Socialist Group. He joined the Radical Party during the Psdi Congress in Rimini and attended the Radical Congress in Budapest. He is President of the Senate Environmental Commission and was particularly involved in the European electoral campaign supporting the candidature of Giovanni Negri.

Marco PANNELLA, Italy: Elected Member.

President of the Federal Council and one of the founders of the Radical Party, he was Member of the provisional secretariat during the presidency of Elio Vittorini from 1962 to 1964. He was Secretary of the Party in 1964-66, a position which he also filled in 1982 and in 1983, Treasurer in 1971 and President in 1987. He entered Parliament for the first time in 1976, was a member of European Parliament in the first two legislatures, and last June was re-elected on the Liberal Republican Federalist ticket. Antimilitarist, non-violence--it would be impossible to list all the battles he has led, sustaining long hunger strikes, adopting thus for the first time in Europe Gandhi's non-violent methods as a means of political struggle. Like many Radicals, he became familiar with prison in affirming civil rights. In December of 1988, Indro Montanelli wrote of him: "I cannot, and I believe that no one must, forget that among the many pranks staged by this tireless clown, there has never been a bid for power".

Ferenc PARCZ, Hungary: Elected Member.

One of the leaders of Young Hungarian Writers, poet and translator with a predilection for the works of Pier Paolo Pasolini, he joined the Radical Party before the Congress in Budapest and assisted in its organization

Angelo PEZZANA, Italy: Member by Right.

A member of the Spadaccia Secretariat in 1975 and founder of "Fuori!", he was protagonist in the clamorous action for homosexual liberation--and not only in Italy: he was arrested in Moscow and expelled from the Soviet Union. Particularly sensitive to the Jewish question, his Turin bookshop "Rosa Luxemburg" was attacked by anti-semitic vandals. In the last regional elections, he was elected Councilor on the Piedmont Environmentalist ticket. Elected Deputy in 1979, he resigned after having attended only one session, during which he spoke significantly on the homosexual question.

Anna PETROLUCCI, Italy: Member by Right.

Treasury Coordinator during the first part of the Stanzani Secretariat and one of the organizers of the Congress in Budapest, she has also been director of the Radical News Agency and has worked for Radical Radio.

Paolo PETROSANTI, Italy: Elected Member.

Director of the newspaper, Radical News, an antimilitarist and conscientious objector, he was imprisoned in Comiso in 1983. A leader in radical action in the Eastern European countries, he was one of the founders of the "Do Not Kill" commission, and conducted the battle to save the life of Paula Cooper. He has also worked with Radical Radio, and was for some years responsible for its nightly press survey.

Jean-Pierre ROCHE, France: Elected Member.

A Bordeaux antiques dealer, he joined the Radical Party for the first time in 1986.

Francesco RUTELLI, Italy: Member by Right.

Currently a Vice Secretary of the Radical Party, he was Secretary in 1981 and Treasurer in 1984. An antimilitarist and conscientious objector, he was co-organizer of the Institute for Research on Disarmament, Development and Peace. A Member of Italian Parliament since 1983, he also filled the position of President of the Radical Parliamentary Group. In the last European elections, he was one of the organizers of the "Environmentalist- Rainbow" ticket. He was arrested and imprisoned in 1981 for having distributed an antimilitarist pamphlet.

Mustapha SARR, Burkina Faso: Elected Member.

Of Ouagadougou, 35 years of age, entrepreneur.

Francesca SCOPELLITI, Italy: Elected Member.

Milanese journalist and Enzo Tortora's companion during the most difficult years. Together with Tortora and the Radicals, she conducted the battle for a just justice and, after the tragic death of Enzo, created the "Tortora Foundation" for which she is Treasurer. Gianfranco SPADACCIA, Italy: Member by Right.

President of the Italian Senate European Federalist Ecologist Group, he was one of the founders of the Radical Party, serving as Secretary in 1968, 1975 and 1976. He has many times been President of the Federal Council. In 1975, as Party Secretary, together with CISA (Information Centre for Sterilization and Abortion), he organized civil disobedience against the criminalization of abortion--and for this was arrested and condemned for criminal association and procurement of abortion. Elected to the Italian Senate in 1979 and in 1987, from 1983 to 1987 he was Deputy. In 1985, he was detained in Ankara during a non-violent demonstrate and subsequently expelled from Turkey.

Ilona STALLER, Italy: Member by Right.

Pornostar, Hungarian by birth and an Italian citizen, she was elected in 1987 to the Chamber of Deputies on the Radical Party ticket. She joined the Radical Party during the 10,000 Membership Drive of 1986, and had taken part in the Consultative Federal Assembly. Her candidature and election caused a sensation in Italy and abroad.

Antonio STANGO, Italy: Member by Right.

Currently a member of the Stanzani Secretariat, he was previously a member of the Negri Secretariat. He has for years been politically committed to the cause of civil and human rights in the Eastern European countries, taking part in non-violent action, directing specialized reviews and organizing assemblies at which prestigious dissidents have participated. He is the Director of the Italian Helsinki Committee.

Lorenzo STRIK LIEVERS, Italy: Member by Right.

European Federalist Senator and Ecologist, he was born in Switzerland and is resident in Milan, where he is a Modern History researcher at the university. One of the organizers of the reconstruction of the Radical Party, he was arrested in 1966 for having distributed an antimilitarist pamphlet during the Armed Forces celebration. The clamorous trial which followed, in which he was absolved, contributed to bringing public attention to the question of the right to conscientious objection. In 1983, he was President of the Federal Council, and has many times been a member.

Andrea TAMBURI, Italy, Elected Member.

Florentine, ex-Communist, he approached the Radical Party in 1981, during actions for the Nobel Prize Winners' Appeal against world starvation. He was expelled from Yugoslavia in 1985, for the non-violent action of distributing pamphlets supporting Yugoslavia's entrance into the EEC. He has worked, for over a year, in the Radical Party offices in Trieste, the bridge to Radical actions in Yugoslavia.

Marco TARADASH, Italy: Member by Right.

President of the Federal Council in 1986 and 1988, journalist and the most familiar voice on Radical Radio, over whose microphones he broadcast 10 years of the programme, "Press and Government". In 1976, a member of the Liberal Youth of Italy, he joined the Radical Party, organizing campaigns and non-violent actions against slanted and distorted news of the RAI and the press. In 1988, he founded CORA (Radical Antiprohibitionist Coordination). In 1989, he was one of the organizers of the Congress to create LIA. In May of this year, together with other Radical and antiprohibitionist activists, he created the "Drug Antiprohibitionist against Political and Common Crime" ticket, which won around a half million votes. On the 18th of June, he was elected to European Parliament.

Aligi TASCHERA, Italy: Member by Right.

Milanese, member of the Aglietta Secretariat in 1978, and the Negri Secretariat in 1985, and many times member of the Federal Council, he was active in the sexual liberation and antimilitarist campaigns.

Massimo TEODORI, Italy: Member by Right.

Currently one of the Vice Secretaries of the Radical Party, he was elected to Parliament on the Radical ticket in 1979. He participated in the founding of the Radical party in 1955 and its refounding in 1962. He has taught American History in various Italian and U.S. universities. He led important campaigns in Parliament to denounce government scandals, and was member and opposition rapporteur on the investigation commission on Sindona and the P2.

Alessandro TESSARI, Italy: Member by Right.

Professor at the University of Padua and Communist Deputy in many legislatures, he was a candidate and elected on the Radical ticket in 1979. He has been actively involved in the industrial commission against State appropriations and percentages in the pro-nuclear energy policy. As Radical Deputy, he was one of the leaders of the long obstructionist campaigns against emergency provisions to the law.

Andrea TORELLI, Italy: Member by Right.

Pharmacist and Treasurer of the Radical Party in 1968, he was one of the founders of Radical Radio. If it is true that politics have need of the small offering of a shilling, Andrea has for over 20 years generously financed the most important campaigns of the Radical Party.

Maddalena ANTONA TRAVERSI, Italy: Elected Member.

Milanese, and very actively involved in the Antiprohibitionist campaign, she created the "Informed People" cooperative, which cultivated a marijuana field in Seveso, for which--along with other Radical activists--she denounced herself and is presently awaiting trial. On July 16, at the first CORA Congress, she was asked to become part of its Secretariat

Maurizio TURCO, Italy: Member by Right.

Enologist, he has been Vice-Treasurer of the Party since 1988. He joined the Radical Party in 1979, and in 1981, created the "Apulia Regional Council against Starvation", He was also one of the organizers of the anti-nuclear campaign in Apulia against the plant in Avetrana. In 1983, he was elected to the Federal Council, and from 1984 to 1986, he was a member of the Negri Secretariat. In August of 1985, he was arrested in Ankara during a non-violent demonstration and, subsequently, expelled from Turkey. In 1987, he was the Director of the newspaper, Radical News. At the recent CORA Congress, he was elected Treasurer of that association.

Andrea VALCARENGHI, Italy: Member by Right.

Activist in the Student Movement and founder of the review, "Re Nudo", he is author of the book, "Underground with Closed Fist", the preface to which--written by Marco Pannella and entitled "Fantasy as Necessity"--was defined by Pasolini as the first Manifesto of the Radical Party. A member of the Stanzani Secretariat, he is also an exponent of the Sannyasin movement.

Emilio VESCE, Italy: Member by Right.

Headmaster of a Padua high school, he was active during the 1970s in the ranks of Potere operaio and is currently director of Radio Sherwood. On April 7, 1979, he was arrested during the blitz of Judge Calogera and charged with belonging to an armed band, subversion and armed revolt against the powers of the State. Sentenced to 13 years imprisonment, he was subsequently absolved in appeal after having served 5 years, 5 months and 5 days in special prisons. During his imprisonment, he joined the Radical Party. He was a member of the Negri Secretariat, and in 1987 was elected Deputy on the Radical ticket. He was one of the organizers of the "Environmentalist-Rainbow" ticket.

Ambrogio VIVIANI, Italy: Elected Member.

General and commander in the parachute corps "Folgore", and head of the counter-espionage services. He joined the Radical Party in 1986, during the 10,000 memberships campaign. He was a candidate on the Radical ticket in the political elections of 1987, and the first of the non-elected to the Chamber. He was elected City Councilor in Catania on the ticket headed by Pannella, "For Catania Municipal Laic and Environmentalist"; he immediately resigned.

Enzo ZENO ZENCOVICH, Italy, Member by Right.

A lawyer and one of the founders of the "Piero Calamandrei" Centre for Legal Action. He has been involved for years in Radical campaigns and, with Giandomenico Caiazza, was counsel for the plaintiff Enzo Tortora in the trial for compensation for damages, and one of the organizers of the Tortora Foundation. He was Director of the daily "Liberazione", and in 1978 was member of the Aglietta Secretariat. He has been a member of the Federal Council many times.

Bruno ZEVI, Italy: Member by Right.

President of the Radical Party since 1986, he is a prominent member of the Italian Jewish Community. In order to escape anti-semitic persecution during the Fascist regime, he went to the United States where he obtained a degree in Architecture at Harvard University. He was director of "Italian Notebooks for the Justice and Liberty Movement", and returned to Europe in 1943 to take part in the antifascist struggle of the Action Party. An internationally famous art critic, he is full professor at the universities of Venice and Rome. Since 1955, he has written a column for the weekly magazine "L'Espresso". He was elected Deputy on the Radical ticket in l987, and has for years been a member of the Italian Socialist Party. In 1986, he led a generous campaign to save the Radical Party.

He was in fact elected on the Christian Democrat ticket in 1963 and thanks to his efforts at that time the law abolishing State monopolies on bananas and rural electricity was approved.
