The European Parliament,
A. whereas a 670 MW nuclear plant is in operation in the vicinity of Krsko (Slovenia), 130 km from the Italian border,
B. whereas, in its 9 years of operation, over 80 incidents of varying degrees of gravity have occurred at this plant, which was built in 1981 with obsolete technology,
C. whereas, owing to the plant's lack of safety and the danger it presents, protest groups in Slovenia and Croatia and the Regional Council of Corinthia have called for it to be closed down,
D. whereas the EURATOM Treaty entrusts the Community with the task of maintaining all approprate links, including relations with third countries, in the field of nuclear energy,
E. whereas, an incident at the Krsko power plant involving the release of radioactivity territory,
1. expresses its concern at the repeated incidents of varying degrees of gravity which have occurred at the Krsko nuclear power plant, and calls on the Commission to take the necessary steps to analyse the causes of such accidents;
2. calls on the competent authorities to arrange for a check on safety at the Krsko power plant, the effectiveness of the monitoring systems, proper waste disposal and, possibly, shutdown of the plant itself;
3. calls on the Commission and the Council to take concrete steps to promote economic and scientific cooperation and provide support the Yugoslav Republic and set up a research programme aimed at defining a new energy plan principally concerned with energy-saving measures and renewable sources;
4. instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council and the Yugoslav Government.
