Mayors say no to prohibitionism

ABSTRACT: The Mayors of Hamburg, Zurich, Amsterdam and Frankfurt have said no to the prohibitionist policy on drugs by signing the "Resolution of Frankfurt". Other Cities in Germany, Italy, Norway, Austria, Poland, Holland and Greece are supporting the Frankfurt project, and their representatives will be attending the "2nd International Conference of European Cities at the Centre of Drug-Trafficking" to be held at Zurich, in November 1990.

(The Party New, n.3, August 1991)

Mayors from twenty European cities will attend the "2nd International Conference of European Cities at the Centre of Drug-Trafficking", which will be held in Zurich from 20-22 November 1991, to discuss and formulate a new political approach to drugs.

They will take as their departure point, the simple truth that prohibitionism does not work and a new direction has to be taken to arrest the damage caused by drug-trafficking and, consequently, the illegal use of drugs. Drugs must be legalized! This is the only way to radically curtail the black market, which generates such enormous profits and provokes such disastrous effects.

The "Resolution of Frankfurt" signed in November 1990 by the Mayors of Hamburg, Zurich, Amsterdam and Frankfurt, represents a completely new approach to that taken so far.

Cities in Germany, Austria, Norway, Holland, Italy, Poland and Greece have already signed the Resolution. And the Mayors of these cities have said that they wish to attend the Conference in Zurich. Some will be present as observers, but others have actually declared that they will adopt the "Resolution of Frankfurt" as their own and support the project in its entirety.

These are the people whose job it is to govern the big cities suffering from the devastating effects of prohibitionism, and who are determined to find a way of countering them and eliminating them in the future. They are people who have simply chosen to face, and find a solution to, a problem that cannot be ignored any longer, as it could jeopardize security in large areas of the world.

Mayors, members of parliament, and representatives of all democratic countries are hereby invited to confirm their presence (either as observers or participants) at the "2nd International Conference of European Cities at the Centre of Drug-Trafficking" to be held from November 20-22 199l in Zurich, to: Emilie Liebermerr, Solzialant der Stadt Zurich, Zentralsekrtariat Amtshaus Helvetiaplatz CH-8026 Zurich (fax: 41/1/2910989) or any of the Radical Party offices in Rome, Moscow, Budapest, Prague or Brussels listed on the back page.
