It is possible to select the texts you are interested in by using the command Sele(c)t.
By typing the letter 'z', the following series of requests will appear:
Key words:
Author:
From (date):
To (date):
Each text of the archive is filed through the identification and indication (in a space which users cannot see) of:
- the key words (in other words, the main subjects of the text, any references to persons or cities, possibly also the type of text or of the newspaper in which it was published)
- the name or names of the authors (Surname Name)
- the date of the text (date in which it was published in the case of an article, or the date in which it was passed in the case of a document).
It is therefore possible to select texts by subject only (e.g. all texts concerning drugs), by author only (e.g. all texts by Pannella), by date only (e.g. all texts from 12 December 1980 to 23 September 1987), and also by subject and author (e.g. all texts concerning drugs written by Pannella), by subject and date (e.g. all texts concerning drugs written between 12 December 1980 and 23 September 1987), and by author and date (e.g. all texts written by Pannella between 12 December 1980 and 23 September 1987).
All three indications should be given for a complete selection (e.g. all texts on drugs, written by Pannella between 12 December 1980 and 23 September 1987).
Once it has completed the search, Agorà indicates the number of selected texts that can be listed or read by using the commands (L)ist (S)elected or (R)ead (S)elected.
KEY WORDS
You may also indicate more than one key word (and it is advisable to obtain a more accurate selection). Key words should be separated by a comma (,) if you want to search a text concerning two subjects contained in the same text (drugs, crime), or by a plus (+) if you want to search a text concerning one or the other subject (drugs + crime). As we said above, key words select the text not only by the subjects dealt with, but also by the type of text (motion, leaflet, article) or by the names of countries contained in it (Togliatti, Czechoslovakia).
E.g.
Let us presume we want to search the text of the motion of a Federal Council of the Radical Party.
If we write:
Key words: motion
Agorà will select all texts containing or commenting motions (of federal Councils, of Congresses, of Parliaments...). With this system, Agorà will select a few hundred texts.
If, on the contrary, we write:
Key words: motion, federal Council of the Radical Party
Agorà will select only the motions that concern the federal Council of the Radical Party, restricting the number of texts that are selected.
If we write:
Key Words: motion, federal Council of the radical Party, Yugoslavia
Agorà will select only the motions of the federal council of the Radical Party which concern Yugoslavia, further restricting the number of texts which, once listed, enable to quickly locate the desired text.
As far as the logical operator + is concerned, if we write:
Key words: motion, federal council of the Radical party + Yugoslavia + drugs
Agorà will select all the motions of the Federal Council of the Radical Party which concern Yugoslavia or drugs.
AUTHOR
The author of the text is indicated by giving the Surname and the Name, when the author is certain and indicated. In the case of anonymous articles, the author is indicated with the name of the newspaper in which the articles were published. In the case of interviews, the Author is normally indicated as the interviewed person and the interviewer.
E.g.
If we write:
Author: Calderisi Giuseppe
Agorà will select all the articles, addresses, interviews made to, and the documents presented by Calderisi.
If we write:
Author: Radical News
Agorà will select all the anonymous articles published by Radical News.
DATE
When selecting, Agorà automatically suggests a time span that goes from the date of the first text of the archive (10 December 1955) to the date of the most recent text.
It is possible to restrict the selection by deleting the dates suggested by Agorà and indicating the desired ones (use Backspace key to delete).
E.g.
If you write:
From (date): 1 Jan 82
To (date): 31 Dec 82
Agorà will select all texts written, published or presented in 1982.
The Key words used for locating the texts are alphabetically listed in the sector DICTIONARY, where it is also possible to select. It is enough to write the first letter of a key word.
