Religious fanaticism: a threat to peace
The European Parliament passes a resolution against fundamentalism

ABSTRACT: An account of the resolution passed by the European Parliament of Strasburg condemning the "fundamentalist pressure in the countries of Maghreb and generally speaking in Islam". The document condemns "religious fanaticism" while "recommending to the government concerned by the problem to carry on the struggle against political terrorism by judicial means and in the respect of human rights and fundamentalist freedoms"

(1994 - IL QUOTIDIANO RADICALE, 28 October 1993)

With a resolution of the Parliament of Strasbourg, Community Europe has taken a stance on the fundamentalist pressure in the countries of Magreb and in the Islamic countries generally speaking. The fear, in the capitals of the continent, is that fundamentalism could migrate and attack the other side of the Mediterranean among the massive communities of Muslim immigrates especially in France or Germany.

The European Parliament's document condemns "religious fanaticism" which "in all forms, represents a threat to peace, freedom and rights of man". The members of the European Parliament underline (needlessly perhaps) the "serious responsibilities of several fundamentalist leaders, who with their appeals to intolerance and violence prevent the development and democratization of political life". Also, they denounced "the continued support given by the government of Iran, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and other countries of the region to the strengthening of the fundamentalist movements.

While condemning fundamentalism, the European Parliament does not forget to recall that everyone's rights, including the fundamentalists'', must in any case be guarantied.

This is a concern shared also by Amnesty International, which in a report on Egypt disclosed in September denounced the serious irregularities found in the trials against the fundamentalists accused of having organized acts of terrorism.

These trials are organized in front of military courts, after the special decrees issued in 19923.

That is why the European Parliament "recommends the governments concerned to continue the struggle against political terrorism through judicial means and in the respect of human rights and fundamental liberties".
