Reckoning on drugs

From the testimony of the mafia member Annacondia turned state's evidence to the Anti-mafia commission.

ABSTRACT. The ex mafia-man turned State's evidence Annacondia reckons on "how many tons of heroin Italy needs every day", and explains that, when a lorry carrying 100 kilos of heroin is seized, "the others have already gone..."

(1994 - IL QUOTIDIANO RADICALE, 4 novembre 1993)

How much heroin and how much hashish do you think circulate in Italy in a year?

Let's make an example: what is the population of Milan? Two and a half million. And what percentage of the population is drug-addicted? 10%, 5%? Two million and a half at 5% makes one hundred thousand people.

One hundred thousand people consuming a gram a head per day makes 100,000 grams, which correspond to 100 kilos. Milan alone needs 100 kilos. Now let's make a proportion in Italy and let's see how many tons a day of heroin Italy needs. Small-scale dealers, small traffickers, who sell 10 or 50 kilos, are an exception, they do not form an organization proper; they are small Turkish, South American organization that introduce these wares.

How much did you used to deal?

On average I was dealing about 30, 25, 35 kilos a month.

Of heroin?

I was dealing 6-7 kilos of cocaine and 20-25 kilos of heroin. There were months when I'd deal 40-50 kilos of narcotics, but on other months I had to keep to 20 kilos because of the police forces...

Are there deposits in Italy for the stocking of these substances, or do they arrive continuously?

There is a deposit.

There's a surprising fact: even when seizures of 100-200 kilos are done, the substance is never in shortage and the price does not rise.

Impossible, because while 100 kilos are seized, 10,000 lorries have already passed; they pinch the right lorry because they have inside information.

In the meanwhile the other lorries pass...

In the meanwhile the others have passed.
