(1994 - IL QUOTIDIANO RADICALE, 12 November 1993)
Former Yugoslavia: tribunal on war crimes
The Foreign Minister of Croatia, Dr. Mate Granic, assured a radical delegation that had submitted to him the initiative pf establishing the tribunal for the war crimes in the former Yugoslavia, that "Croatia would support and participate in the activities of the Tribunal and would accept its decisions". The Minister also underlined "his personal support" to the Radical Party's initiative. The Radical delegation was received in Zagreb (as well as by Granic) also by the president of the Croatian parliament Stipe Mesic, who, in addition to defining the Radical Party "the conscience of the world", reiterated the full support of the Parliament of Zagreb to the urgent establishment of the Tribunal. Granic remembered that Croatia had urged its creation as early as in 1991. According to Mesic, the Tribunal should be given "greater powers of extradition" to prosecute criminals also in their native states.
A full day dedicated to the radical initiative on the former Yugoslavia will be held in Oviedo, Asturias, on November 16th. In the afternoon the president of the parliament of Asturias, Eugenio Carvajal, Member of Parliament of the Socialist federation of Asturias, will chair a demonstration.
European Parliament: deserters of peace
The European Parliament will grant asylum to deserters and draft dodgers of the former Yugoslavia. Thanks to a radical proposal, the Strasbourg Assembly passed a resolution that provides for the adoption of rules on the part of the European Community to protect and welcome deserters and draft dodgers, guaranteeing their right to political asylum. The proposal, tabled by the radical deputy Marco Taradash, was also sponsored by the Euro-MP (member of the Radical Party) Bertens and by the Green MP Alex Langer.
Africa: death penalty
The Federal Council of the Radical Association for the Rule of Law in Africa (A.R.E.D.A.) was held on 20 and 30 October in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso). The meeting was opened by the President of the Federal Council, Basile Guissou. Among the items on the agenda were the support to the radical campaign for the establishment of the tribunal on the former Yugoslavia, the initiatives aiming to develop A.R.E.D.A., the opinion campaigns already planned to promote the values of legality and justice in Africa. The Council welcomed the growth of the Association, which now counts, in the various African countries, 950 members, including 58 parliamentarians from eleven parliaments. In the context of the activities of the Federal Council, a group of MPs attending the council decided to set up a League of African Parliamentarians for the abolition of the death penalty by the Year 2000. The conclusive document recalls the declarations of the rights of man of 1789 and 1948, the U.N. documents and the "Charter of the O.U.A."
