It's difficult to define the proportions of a tragedy. The account of the events in Georgia and Caucus are the picture of an epochal disaster. Thousands of deaths, rapes, the systematic tribal-style murder match the tragedy of the living: the tragedy of over 500,000 refugees from Abkhazia, Southern Ossetia and the other war areas, plagued by cold and hunger. Without an international-scale humanitarian aid, the world will again witness the terrifying pictures of Kurdistan and the former Yugoslavia. The International Community must urgently answer Shevardnaze's appeals, which have so far remained unheeded. Georgia is no longer in a condition to provide for itself. But it is also urgent to save democracy, sustain the Shevardnaze government supported by Parliament and all democrats, including the 12 MPs and the over 150 radical members.
The question of Abkhaz proves, if need there were, that Russia has a foreign policy again. The fact that it is the same of the Zarist imperialism of the communist one of the U.S.S.R. doesn't seem to matter to the West and the International Community. The destruction of Sukhumi is not only the victory of armed bands equipped armed bands with the remains of the arsenals of the former Red Army, but also the symbol of the attack on the independence of Georgia, on its brief and tormented season of democracy. Now it is clear to all.
Shevardnaze has surrendered, he has been forced to ask for CIS membership for Georgia and the intervention of the former Soviet armed forces. Thus, it is very likely that the militia of Ghamsakurdia will be stopped; new compromises will be reached for Abkahzia; Georgia will be part of the empty box of the CIS and everything dangerously resembles the "past".
