Former Minister of the Interior of EcuadorABSTRACT: "The twentieth century calls for a synthesis of the best contributions of the processes of the nineteenth and twentieth century" blended into a "new humanism". A force such as the radical party contributes to achieve this synthesis.
(1994 - IL QUOTIDIANO RADICALE, 22 November 1993)
Humanity, which in the nineteenth century experienced the development of economic and political liberalism and the configuration of a huge colonial system, experienced many revolutions in the twenty-first century which, in the quest for equality, have sacrificed the freedom of man and have failed tp give new answers to the current challenges introduced by technical innovation, globalization and the redefinition of nationalism.
In spite of the fact that the period after the Cold War has averted the danger of a nuclear disaster, it has not allowed to solve the secular problems created by poverty and inequality among nations, nor to face the new problems created by the destruction of the environment and the surge of xenophobic nationalism. The twentieth century calls for a synthesis of the best contributions of the processes of the nineteenth and twentieth century, blended into a new humanism, allowing to combine efficiency and equity, order and freedom, sovereignty and inter-dependence. New political movements such as the Radical Party contribute to that indispensable process of development and enactment of a new humanism.
