5 TUCSON DEMONSTRATORS CONDEMN WAR MOVES
AGAINST IRAQ, CALL FOR END TO SANCTIONS; SECOND
PROTEST SET FOR FEBRUARY 12
At the Tucson Federal Building on Thursday afternoon,
February 5, 45 people demonstrated against U.S. threats of
military attack on Iraq and for the lifting of economic
sanctions against Iraq. Signs and banners at the traditional
protest site greeted rush hour traffic plus hundreds of
additional pedestrians and traffic attending the annual
Tucson Gem and Mineral shows, a major international event.
Duluth, Minnesota: Joel Kilgour, 20, was arrested after he
tossed his own blood across the stone exterior of the federal
building. Kilgour is a member of Loaves & Fishes Catholic
Worker community.
Earlier, four resisters had entered the building and posted
photos of Iraqi children in hospitals. John Heid and Jane
Hosking, two L&F members, had taken the photos on their
recent trip to Iraq with Voices in the Wilderness, a
Chicago-based humanitarian group that has defied U.S-led
sanctions on medical supplies and on the travel ban to Iraq.
Approximately 60 people observed and many held signs calling
for an end to both the threat of war and to the crippling
sanctions.
Burlington, VT-- Following a Noon rally and speakout at the
Univ. of Vermont about 200 people marched down the hill to
Church Street, the main street of downtown Burlington. With
chants of "Hey Clinton! Hey Gore! We don't want your Bloody
War!" the spirited marchers carried anti-war and anti-blockade
posters and banners. Many passing motorists honked and waved
in support of the marchers.
The marchers then circled the downtown area carrying out
short term tactical occupations of intersections ending at
the Burlington Free Press--the local Gannett newspaper. It
was announced that a national action is planned for next
Monday (2/23) for a simultaneous occupation of the fifty
Governors offices in the U.S. at noon (EST) A call was made
to go to Montpelier, Vermont's capitol, next Monday for a
talk with Governor Dean. The plan is to ask the fifty
Governors to call on Clinton not to bomb Iraq and to end
the blockage, nonviolently staying in their offices
until they do.
Before the March broke up, a rapid response plan was made to
meet in a mass noontime protest at the Burlington Federal
Building (Pearl St. and Elmwood Ave.) on the day following
any U.S. bombing of Iraq. In case the hundreds of demonstrations
like this on going on all across the country and the world
are not enough to keep Clinton from bombing Iraq, the plan
is to raise the level of protest accordingly.
A late breaking news update from the Native Forest Network:
CONTACT: Native Forest Network Upon the news that Janet Reno was at the Burlington Free-Press
building, people began to rally with chants such as "Hey Reno,
Tell Bill--No Iraq War!" After realizing that Reno was not
going to come out to address the crowd, a group of a dozen
protestors took over the lobby of the Free-Press building.
They remained in the lobby under the watch of the police
until two of the protestors rushed the stairs in an attempt
to get upstairs and find Reno. They were both arrested.
When the police attempted to take the first arrestee out to
the waiting police car their access was blocked by chanting
protesters.
Following this escapade, the protesters reconvened and took
their protest to Senator Leahy's office, who has refused to
take a stand against future bombings of Iraqi civilians.
Three more arrests were later reported in Burlington after
the arraignment of these first three - the situation is
in flux!
...& in Tucson, Arizona...
there are demonstrations every Thursday 4:30-5:30 pm
at the federal building, and same time & place on day any
bombing is announced.
Also, on March 1, 2 pm at our local Davis-Monthan Air Force
Base - an anti-war rally & citizen inspection of the base for
weapons of mass or indiscriminate destruction, namely depleted
uranium used by the pilots who train to fly A-10 anti-tank
aircraft here.

VALENTINE'S DAY DEMONSTRATION IN SAN FRANCISCO AND LONDON TO
AVERT PERSIAN GULF BOMBING, DEMAND AN END TO SANCTIONS ON
IRAQ, AND SEND LOVE LETTERS TO PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON
Due to the strong possibility that Iraq will be attacked by
U.S. and British forces on February 17th, peace activists
jointly demonstrated in London, England, and San Francisco,
California, to show their hearts, for the people of Iraq, and
to the governments of the United States and the United
Kingdom, on Valentine's Day.
Protesters in San Francisco brought Valentine's Day love
letters and mailed them to Bill Clinton, telling him that they
love him, and asking him to avert the bombing, and end the
sanctions, on Iraq.
The events were sponsored by the Gulf Action Hotline in San
Francisco, and the National Peace Council in London.

ISKD will make a press statement on the street on
February 13 and will protest the attitude of USA and its
supporters.
There is no concrete plan now. One idea is to write an
anti-war manifest and try to distribute it widely, get
signatures from well-known intellectuals, artists etc to
create publicity.
ODP (Ozgurluk ve Dayanisma Partisi - Freedom and Solidarity
Party) started a march from Ankara to Incirlik, an American
military airforce unit in the south of Turkey which was used to
bomb Iraq in 1991.

Melbourne: As demonstrations to military action with Iraq
rocked major Australian capital cities Friday activists are
set to travel to Baghdad to prevent a US military strike on
Iraq.
In revolt against Australia committing SAS forces to a US
onslaught on Iraq activists are considering to travel to Iraq
to shield `the palaces', defend the Iraqi people and break
the devastating UN sanctions crippling Iraq.
The president of the South Movement, David Muller confirmed
that the Melbourne based Non-aligned Nations support group
had been one of many Australian organisations considering an
open invitation from foreign affairs bureau of Iraq's Arab
Socialist Baath Party to send people to Iraq.
About 300 people people have gathered at Melbourne's GPO to
protest against Australia sending troops to the Gulf. The
rally is one of several being held across the country. About
200 protesters in Sydney have condemned Australia's
involvement in a possible military strike against Iraq. They
were taking part in a rally outside the US consulate.
The protests organised by peace, socialist and youth
organisations, also criticised the US for leading the
threatened strike, and demanded an end to sanctions against
Iraq. In 1991 Australians peace activists were well
repesented in the peace camp on the Iraq/Saudi Arabia peace
camp.
