On January 26, Dmitrii Neverovskii, conscientious objector, member of the Radical Party and the ARA, went on hunger strike (without water) in Kaluga prison to protest against violation of his rights.
On November 25, 1999 young mathematician Neverovskii was sentenced by the Court of Obninsk (Kaluga region) for conscientious objection because of his political convictions. He declared that he did not agree with the Chechen war and applied for the alternative civilian service instead of the military service, according to the Constitution. However, the Court sided with the military commissariat and declared that Neverovskii was evading the military service. His punishment was the most severe one provided by Art. 328 - two years of prison. He was arrested in the courtroom and brought to the insvestigattion prison of Kaluga SIZO 37/01 with his handcuffs on.
In prison Neverovskii appealed to Russian conscripts, calling them not to give up and not to betray their convictions.
On January 18 Neverovskii was brought into the lock-up under this pretext: when everybody was drown out of the cell for a morning control he forgot to put his hands at his back. Dmitrii has to resist in the lock-up one more week, staying in the basement without heating and water.
