Shall all the people stating that they are "against" drugs, that it is necessary to "fight against drugs" cut it out please? Of course I'm referring to those who also state that they are anti-prohibitionists!!! I've already written something of the kind, but nobody seems to give a damn.Let me summarize:
1. "Drugs" don't exist. If it's heroin they're talking about, why not call it with its proper name, and do the same for all the other substances that can be classified as "drugs"?
2. How can it be that Taradash, Teodori, and all those who have made anti-prohibitionism into their political program, continue to declare that they are "against" certain chemical formulas (for example chloridrate of cocaine and THC) and therefore presumably "in favour" of other substances (nutmeg, alcohol, benzodiazepines or clove).
3. It's not fair to advocate a "war against drugs" with anti-prohibitionist methods, like people continuously do. Instead it would be honest to aknowledge that mankind has always made use of drugs, in its correct definition as psychoactive substances used for recreative purposes, and always will. That they have a right to do so or not can be more or less interesting, but the fact is, that there are more drugs than is believed, and many more will be discovered. Whether chemical or natural, legal or illegal, they have been used and will be used in future in ways and places that are geographically very different.
People who state that they are "against" this are simply declaring something that contradicts reality and the history of mankind.
On the contrary, if people started leaving banalities behind and started speaking about "control of consumption" of the single substances, they would be contributing to the cause of clarity and honesty.
Moreover: the anti-drug show, that has been performing at least twice a day since 16 months accept the fact that everything is known on the subject of "drugs". On the contrary I believe that Italy is very ignorant on the subject of widely consumed drugs. As to "drug abusers" (a vaguely scientific term that is currently used together with "drug-addict"), nobody knows their exact number. Above all nobody has a clue as to the quantity and the ways in which drugs are consumed, be they legal or illegal, in this country. Which are the trends, the geographical areas of major concentration, what is the age range, and above all: what sort of market is it? What does it offer? How does it change?
How can it be that nobody considers it relevant to know how many youngsters (and how many adults) consume hashish, how and why it is sold in italian piazzas with the name of heroin? Any intelligent policy on drugs should start by considering these data, which are to be reliable and up-to-date. In Italy the only thing that is being done is to list the "record confiscations" of drugs, announced by the TG as if they were reporting on the "record benefits" reaped by stadiums and of Totocalcio.
It might be pointed out that the activation of services of this kind on illegal consumption is in contrast with current laws as well as with those that will be enforced, but a big contribution can come, in such a wide and new field, from private associations (past experiences of this kind have been brought out in London and Amsterdam), and the organs of the local governments and the single deputies could also play a role, at least a propulsive role.
It is to be hoped that candiates wishing to be elected as anti-prohibitionist in italian municipalities on the 6th and 7th of may will start doing it before the others.
