Rome 29 November 1990Dear Marco,
I hereby wish to briefly explain the reasons for which I did not take part in the CORA's national Assembly.
The first reason is the relation between the CORA and the Radical Party. As a matter of principle, I have always been against the obligation of joining the Radical Party, a thing which strikes me as being in contradiction with the Party's "anti-partyist" vocation.
From a practical point of view, the binding relation between the CORA and the Radical Party has expressed itself in the planning (which, among other things, was not explained in the first notification letter) of a meeting to celebrate divorce on Saturday at 3.30 pm, which caused a forced interruption of the Assembly of the CORA, to the detriment of the completeness of the internal debate and of the availability of my time - and of the time of the companions coming from other cities. The second reason is connected to the doings of the LIA, and especially of the recent Forum held in Athens, which I attended. In that circumstance, I was able to experience the radical and ultimate incompatibility between my need (existential but also political) to participate in a creative process through the exchange of ideas, and the cultural approach of the professional "politicians". And I can honestly add that my impression was shared by several eminent foreign participants of the Athens Forum. Paradoxically, that "divorce
between science and politics", which we pointed to as the origin of antiprohibitionist strategies, is occurring also in our midst.
At this you could object that I might have stated these opinions personally at the Assembly. If I haven't, it is because experience has taught me that in the Radical party those who criticize the choices taken by the leadership are inevitably doomed to succumb - for a series of reasons that belong to the realm of "psychopolitics". The refusal to be present probably represents the most effective way to express my dissent; and certainly it is the most convenient one from the point of view of mental health.
Needless to say, I am at your disposal, yours and of the CORA, for any technical contribution considered necessary to antiprohibitionist initiatives.
Best regards
Giancarlo Arnao
