BRUSSELS, April 28 (Reuter) - The EU's scientific committee recommended on Friday that a chemical used in the "Bergasol" make of sun creams should be banned, Commission spokesman Marco Zatterin told Reuters.
The proposed ban, which must be approved by the European Commission to take effect, would outlaw the use the tanning accelerator psolaren, Zatterin said.
Only France opposed banning the substance, a suspected carcinogen used in creams produced by the Freench company Bergaderm, Zatterin said.
"According to the experts, it's not just a suspicion, psolaren is a cancer-causing agent," he said.
EU Consumer Affairs Commissioner Emma Bonino will propose a ban within the next three weeks, he said.
