BRUSSELS, May 22 (Reuter) - European Union Fisheries Commissioner Emma Bonino on Monday condemned Spanish fishermen who blocked a truck carrying imported prawns from Morocco.
Spanish fishermen halted a Dutch truck on Friday travelling from Morocco to the Netherlands and dumped half its 10-tonne cargo of prawns on a road near the southern port of Algeciras.
"This action is illegal and I find this behaviour... unacceptable when negotiations are in progress," a European Commission spokesman quoted Bonino as saying.
The EU and Morocco are due to resume talks on renewal of a bilateral fisheries agreement on June 1 after avoiding the key problems of fish quotas and landings in Moroccan ports during three days of talks last week.
"I am astonished that the same country, which condemned Canada and which defended legality, acts in this way which won't aid the negotiations," Bonino added.
Bonino was referring to the Canadian seizure of a Spanish trawler and harassment of other vessels during a dispute over fishing rights in the northwest Atlantic earlier this year.
