ROME, July 17 (Reuter) - Bildt to enquire over Zepa evacuation
European Union foreign ministers on Monday instructed the EU
special envoy for former Yugoslavia to find out if the Bosnian
government wants its civilians evacuated from the threatened
enclave of Zepa.
"We have asked (Carl) Bildt to sound out if this was the wish
(of the Bosnians) and if so the (European) Commission will try to
set up a mechanism to solve this problem," Spanish Foreign
Minister Javier Solana told a news conference.
Solana said the decision was taken following a report on the
humanitarian situation in the region from the EU's Humanitarian
Aid Commissioner Emma Bonino.
"At this moment, I cannot elaborate any further," Solana said.
EU foreign ministers earlier struggled to find common ground on
how to try and save the U.N. mission in Bosnia from total
collapse after last week's fall of the Moslem enclave of
Srebrenica.
Diplomats said they accepted there was virtually nothing they
could do now to save Zepa if the Serbs continued with the present
onslaught, but would try instead concentrate on saving Gorazde
and Sarajevo.
