The Commission has decided not to raise any objections with regard to a programme of aid for the construction of fishing vessels submitted by the Spanish authorities.

The programme in question lays down the criteria and conditions for structural assistance in the fisheries sector and is an adaptation at regional level (Asturias Region) of national regulations of the same nature already approved by the Commission.

The aid programme stipulates that any construction project is conditional on the requirement that it will not increase fishing effort and on compliance with the targets set out in the multiannual programme (MAGP) for the national fleet. Investment in the construction of fishing vessels should be aimed at meeting hygiene and safety standards, and the financial assistance is granted as a priority to vessels using the most selective gear and fishing methods.
