BRUSSELS, March 5 (Reuter) - British Fisheries Minister Tony Baldry condemned a European Court of Justice decision on Tuesday which he said could mean Spanish fishermen fishing from Spain could take British fish quotas. Baldry said there were about 150 "quota hoppers" flying flags of convenience fishing on the British register and taking about 20 percent of the British offshore catch. "That's crazy. Its got to come to end," Baldry told reporters after a one-hour meeting with Fisheries Commissioner Emma Bonino. Baldry said Britain would respect the Court's ruling which he said was based on freedom of association and freedom of movement under EU law. Britain would raise the issue at the inter-governmental conference starting in Turin at the end of March. "We will seek treaty (or protocol) changes to deal with quota hoppers," he said. "U.K. fish should be for U.K. fishermen," he stressed, adding that he didn't believe any European politician could defend the idea of foreign nationals catching British fishing qu

ota. "I don't believe anyone could put forward a sustainable argument that Cornish fish should be taken by Spanish fishermen." Baldry confirmed that Commissioner Emma Bonino was still planning to visit Britain later this month. "Mrs Bonino is extremely welcome in the U.K....I'm sure the industry will welcome the opportunity of discussing with her their concerns for the future," he said. These include the way in which the Common Fisheries Policy is operated, perceived unfairness of the CFP, concerns about quota hoppers and unequal enforcement of regulations by member states. Bonino is due to visit Scotland for the Aberdeen fish fair before visiting ports in the south west England between March 15-18.
