MILAN, July 25 (Reuter) - Carlo De Benedetti, chairman of Italian informationtechnology group Olivetti SpA, has been appointed chairman of a working group for the creation of a European Union telecommunications regulatory authority. An Olivetti statement said his nomination was in the framework of the European Consultative Committee for the Information Society, known as the Bangemann Group after Telecoms Commissioner Martin Bangemann. The statement said De Benedetti met European Commission President Jacques Santer and Commissioners Emma Bonino and Mario Monti in Brussels on Thursday . On Wednesday, the European Commission adopted a packet of initiatives aimed at smoothing the way for the information highway in Europe. It said EU governments should be required to notify their EU partners when they are planning to adopt measures to regulate the new computer and media services. The Commission also said it was studying ways to increase coordination of telecommunications regulation in the EU.
