humanitarian * REUTER * Bonino says EU ready with more aid in Czech floods

PRAGUE, July 31 (Reuter) - European Commissioner Emma Bonino said on Thursday her humanitarian aid office was ready to provide further assistance if needed for the flood-stricken areas of the Czech Republic and Poland. Bonino met Czech Deputy Foreign Minister Cyril Svoboda and was later due to fly to the flood-hit east of the country to see relief efforts and assess the need for more aid. The Commission's aid office has already provided 2.5 million ECU ($2.7 million) for the flooded areas. "We remain willing and available to provide further assistance if the need arises," Bonino told reporters. More than 100 people have been killed in the worst flooding to hit the region for a century. In the Czech Republic alone, 49 people have died as a result of the floods and many thousands have been made homeless. "The report that we have is that the emergency humanitarian aid, such as water and blankets etcetera, has been used effectively," she said. Bonino said she hoped to find out whether the emergency was over and

if the need was now for a clean-up and reconstruction. Her office was willing to send experts to the area if needed. The floods were triggered by days of torrential rain in early July but Czech rivers have been falling for some days, leaving scenes of devastation in many villages. Homes have been wrecked, crops destroyed and road, rail and telecommunications links have been severed. Economists have put the damage at 50-100 billion crowns ($1.3 to 2.6 billion) but say it is still too early to give precise figures. As the floods recede, health officials have warned of the danger of illness from contaminated drinking water and the many carcasses of drowned animals. Bonino said she had heard Poland was considering a vaccination campaign to avoid epidemics in flooded areas. "We can be helpful in this field," she said. The commissioner was due to travel to Poland later on Thursday.
