--------------------------------------------------------------------------------ESPERANTO/LETTER FROM UEA ON CIAL
May 1998
Mr. Marco Cappato
Mr. Marco PerDuca
UN Representatives
Transnational Radical Party
New York, (Fax: 212-980-1072)
Dear Messrs Cappato and PerDuca,
Please accept my regret for being late in replying to your letter addressed to Ms. Grossman, our representative in New York, dated 11 May. regarding the CIAL Newsletter.
I have read a fax copy of the letter yesterday, when I came back home after several days of travel outside my town.
It seems that because of our concerns to initiate activities as soon as possible to follow up the discussions held during the founding meeting of the NGO Coalition for International Auxiliary Language which was held last year, there was not enough communication.
When I visited New York last year, I enjoyed very close cooperation of your colleague regarding the NGO Coalition. With his support, I attended the NGO Committee meeting for 4 days to lobby in support of the proposal of your organization. It was very unfortunate that I could not meet you personally at that time, although I wished.
During the founding meeting of the NGO Coalition, we proposed the idea of issuing a CIAL Newsletter, and the idea was well accepted. I understand that Mr. Mark Fettes had communicated with you on several occasions on this matter. In the mean time, Mark could not continue to work on the newsletter due to time pressure for his studies and family.
I thought that since we proposed the idea of the newsletter, we are obliged to provide voluntary service of editing and issuing the newsletter at least at the beginning. Therefore, I have asked Mr. Jim Medrano, the editor of the newsletter of our New York Society to help us temporarily. Therefore, Jim is voluntary helping us until CIAL appoints the editor. Please understand it as a temporary measure to initiate the work without further delay.
Regarding the proposal to hold the 2nd meeting of the NGO Coalition, I thought that we will meet at least once a year, as we discussed during the founding meeting, to exchange information and to promote our cause. Of course the most convenient time would be the period during which the ECOSOC Committee for NGO meets. (Now, I understand that this year the committee will meet in 22-26 June). This would be the best time for the Coalition to join together to lobby at the Committee meeting in support of the proposal of your organization.
Therefore, I propose that we hold the 2nd conference of the NGO Coalition on 23 June 1) to review our activities, 2) to discuss arrangements for the CIAL Newsletter and the organizational matters of the NGO Coalition, 3) to discuss future work, and 4) to attend the NGO Committee meeting together to support your proposal, if the Committee discusses the proposal. If it is agreeable, I will try to fly 15 hours to attend the meeting.
Sincerely yours,
LEE Chong-Yeong
President
