GOVERNMENT PAY TRIBUTE TO THE WORK OF EMANUELE GAZZO IN FAVOUR OF EUROPE(Agence EUROPE, 27 August 1994)
Expressing his deepest condolences to Mrs. Gazzo over the death of Mr. Emanuele Gazzo, the President of the European Commission, Jacques Delors, added:
"Through his moral strength, his ethic as joumalist, his depth and the consistency of his European commitment, Mr. Gazzo has for many years been one of the most respected voices and the most listened to in Europe.
"More than a privileged witness to the adventure of our continent's march towards its unity, it is one of Europe's consciences who has just left us, and that the European Commission today salutes him".
The Secretary General of the European Movement, Gian Piero Orsello made the following statement:
"Emanuele Gazzo was a fighter and a pioneer of the European idea, and, for many of these years, through his daily message in Agence Europe, he was the witness of the stages in European construction, and much more.
"The European Movement unfurls all its flags for this man of exceptional qualities.
"Be it in periods of action and prosperity or moments of crisis and setbacks, every day, we read with great interest his comments and opinions. Indeed, Europe owes a great deal to Emanuele GAZZO...
"In March, at a particularly formal ceremony at the Convention of Brussels on the Constitution, we paid tribute to him for his life and works. Our President, Valery GISCARD D'ESTAING, raised his work in a speech in his honour, whereas President DELORS, in the name of all, handed him a symbolic golden ECU.
"We shall always remember Emanuele GAZZO and his work will remain engraved in our memories. We will teach the young about his work and the witness he bore as those of a man who may truly figure among the Pantheon of the Fathers of Europe".
On Friday, the Luxembourg Government issued the following communique:
"The Luxembourg Government learnt with great sadness of the death of Mr. Emanuele GAZZO, yesterday, in Brussels.
"Through more than forty years of activity at the service of the European cause, Mr. GAZZO contributed a great deal to the advancement of the latter. For many Europeans, he had become a political and moral reference, alongside his stature of great joumalist and founder of Agence Europe. The Luxembourg people, moreover, remember that he founded his paper in Luxembourg and that he never ceased being close to our country".
