PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Sunday, February 18, 1996, marks the beginning of International Friendship Week; and WHEREAS, International Friendship Week, which was initiated by Esperanto groups, will be celebrated simultaneously in dozens of countries worldwide; and WHEREAS, Esperanto promotes worldwide friendsahip through the use of common words in European languages, and is the best documented, most promising attempt at forming an universal language acceptable to people of different cultures and background; and WHEREAS, Esperanto also serves as a preparatory course for English and foreign languages because of its systematic, streamlined grammar; and WHEREAS, the Esperanto Society of Chicago has recently been honored by a visit by Dr. Chong-Yeong Lee of Korea who is the president of the World Esperanto
Organization; and
WHEREAS, the Esperanto Society is now translating an algebra textbook for youth groups in the Third World; and
WHEREAS, the UNESCO project FUNDAPAX aims to link Esperanto classrooms in multiple countries by computer, fax, telephone and mail; and
WHEREAS, 1996 marks the 109th anniversary of the Esperanto language:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, RICHARD M. DALEY, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO, do hereby
proclaim February 18 - 24, 1996, to be INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP WEEK IN CHICAGO,
in honor of Esperanto's 109th anniversary.
