"There is nobody in the streets apart from soldiers. When some military vehicles stopped outside the house I thought they had finally come to get me."

Russo told on Tuesday how a battle was underway on the edge of the city, indicating that the KLA rebels were close.

He does not know how long he will last. "I have a feeling the authorities know where I am and are for the moment tolerating my presence.

"I am more scared though for my Kosovan friends and colleagues - the photographers, writers and journalists.

"They have disappeared and I fear the worst. We had a deal that we would be in touch every day. But I have not heard from them in days.

"The people who didn't manage to escape are barricaded in their houses because the streets are full of armed police and soldiers ready to fire.

"Any escape now is impossible. The city is surrounded by Serbs who will not let anyone past without huge payments - the people here are poor and cannot pay."

Russo added: "There is nothing to eat. The cold at night is sometimes unbearable. I gave my two blankets to some refugees who were in a terrible state. I will continue as long as I can.

"It is difficult confirming any snippet of news here. I am trying to collect information about 40 politicians and intellectuals who were arrested.

"I will let you know what happens."
